Introduction In its most basic form, the radio has always played an inherent role in the development of societies around the world. Before the mobile first generation, and even the television, the radio was the device that families would allow into their home and embrace as a connection to the outside world. With no exception to this rule, Hispanic radio has shaped the growing minorities role in American society ever since its boom. Hispanic radio has been the unifying force between Latino communities, which provided them with culturally relevant news and information in their native language at a relatively low cost. They fought for this right, and many gave their lives for this privilege. Why would they believe this right is so important? They knew that the right to vote meant that lawmakers would have to listen to their needs to insure their reelections. The right to vote meant power. Voting in America is definitely a privilege, but there are flaws in the system. The first defect is the Electoral College that elects the president. The electors meet in each State on the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December (December 13, 2004). A majority of 270 electoral votes is required to elect the President and Vice President. No Constitutional provision or Federal law requires electors to vote in accordance with the popular vote in their State. (NARA) This factor takes away the right of the people to choose the president. The popular vote is the real will of the people. Four times in the history of the election for the president the popular vote and the electoral votes were at odds. The first was in 1824 when Andrew Jackson won the popular vote, but John Quincy Adams was chosen to be president instead. Other times were Samuel J. Tilden vs. Rutherford B. Hayes, Grover Cleveland vs. Benjamin Harrison, and in the recent 2000 election Albert Gore vs. George W. Bush. It is impossible to judge whether the right decision was made or not, but that is not the point. The American voters should have been the ones to make the decision. The other flaw that should be addressed is the right of college students to vote in the area where they are attending school. They should use the absentee ballot of there state, county and town where they have resided. Of registered voters between the ages of 18 and 24 (typically referred to as college students), 32 percent vote. Now, certainly there are reasons for this, shedding a negative light on both the system that we are in and the kids that live with us. (Luckett) The problem is that while students are of age and should have the right to, they should not be making local decisions in the town and county where they are only going to be residing for a few years. In most cases, out of town students will pack up and move away from their college when they graduate or decide no to finish. There is nothing wrong with that, except for the fact that since they knew they would not reside in that area for a long period of time, they had no motivation to properly think about the consequences of their votes. When long term residents cast their votes they know that they will live with the results of the election for the rest of their lives, and that it will affect their children and grandchildren as well. America offers its citizens a wonderful opportunity to have a say in their government. Their decisions will lives for generations to come. That does not mean that the voting system is perfect. These problems can be solved and America can remain the greatest country in the world. Some rare and endangered creature s are there, such as the spotted kiwi. Velvet worms and certain reptiles are just some of the other animals that would be destroyed if the coalmine opened. Insect diversity in the location is quite noteworthy. About 77 insect species inhabit Denniston, of which the day-flying moth is part. It should be noted that this insect belongs to four endangered moths in New Zealand. Other noted species that might be endangered are the giant land snail, the West Coast gecko, as well as the southern rat (Stephenson, 2012). The plateau is currently a reserve for the Department of Conservation. Several entities have come together to form the ââ¬ËFriends of the Hillââ¬â¢ association. The mining group will follow a strict rehabilitation plan that aims at restoring soil, water and air conditions during and after the project. The company must also have a hazardous substance plan, a water management plan, dust management plan, construction plan, as well as a geochemistry plan. One can see this through the subsidies that the government gives the dairy industry on its emissions. The presence of the coalmine directly affects the West Coast Regional Council. Economic activities from its presence will benefit the council in terms of taxes collected and the economic ramifications of the same. The coal firm will make a series of payments to the Council in order to facilitate some of the regulatory requirements, and this will also be a source of revenue for it. It would be quite beneficial to the local authority if coal mining started in the Plateau. What will happen if the project commences Coal mining displaces vegetation and changes the natural characteristics of a location. Denniston Plateau is home to a diverse array of biological life. Mining could cause an imbalance in the ecosystem by leading to the destruction of some of the food sources for these species. If the project succeeds, a habitat for the following species would be destroyed: Apteryx haastii, Chionochloa juncea, Powelliphanta patrickensis, Naultinus tuberculatus, Dracophyllum densum, and Metrosideros parkinsonii. All these species are either declining or in danger of extinction. The destruction of their habitat cannot be reversed because even though the mining company opts to rehabilitate the land after completion of the project; these species will eventually be lost. Therefore, conservationists such as Forest Bird and West Coast Environment Network will also lose because they wanted to protect the interests o f species in the location. In fact, their appeal against the protagonists illustrates that they aggressively opposed the project; they would be losers in the process. The above mentioned effect would affect people around the world because New Zealand is unique in terms of biodiversity and the species that it harbors. Bathurst Resources will export about 4.1 million tones of coal annually to several locations around the world. It is likely that about 200 million tones of CO2 will enter the atmosphere when consuming the mineââ¬â¢s coal. Concerns over climate change were rife during the hearings, and they will become a reality if coal production takes place at the Plateau. Bathurst will be exporting coal to some countries that do not care about climate issues. Several of them are not signatories of the Kyoto protocol, so they will not care about their rate of pollution or how badly they affect the environment (Robertson, 2012). Pollution in target countries must also be seen through the climate-change lens. When coal is burnt, it contributes significantly to the amount of greenhouses gases in the atmosphere. This leads to ozone depletion and thus global warming. Unlike other sources of carbon dioxide, coal is one of the dirtiest sources of energy in the world. The amount it produces is disproportionately larger than what other sources, such as car exhaust, contribute. Furthermore, most developed nations use coal to power steam engines and generators. These are all enormous projects that require a high amount of coal. Since it is the source of coal, New Zealand will contribute to global warming or climate change by starting this vicious cycle. Challenges of pollution in the immediate environment must also be considered. The actual mining process will result in the production of dust in the plateau and surrounding areas. While the mining firm will take some measures to prevent the spread of these particles into the atmosphere, it is likely that some of it will s till get to the air and pollute it. The particles stem from drilling processes, coal crushing and wind that spreads them over a large portion. The company needs to invest in dust collection systems in order to minimize the prevalence of these particulates in the air. However, it will not control all of the particulates, so some of them may spread to neighboring areas in the location. One must also consider the effect of coal dust on miners. Individuals who live in the location may develop black lung disease. This disorder often leads to development of lung cancer, but even in its original form, miners must learn how to live with the ailment as no cure exists (World Coal Association, 2009). Pollution will also occur in the form of land disturbance. Prior to opening up of a coal mine in any area, scientists must carry out an analysis of the prevailing conditions and how the mine might alter these conditions. Government authorities must know the level of land disturbance that will take place prior to issuing of a mining permit. If Bathurst establishes a coalmine in this setting, then chances are that the mine will tamper with ground and surface water levels in the plateau. This area will also change the soil characteristics and hence the vegetation that grew in it. If there were a large settlement of people in the location, then they would lose a substantial portion of their food resources. However, since only one residential house can be found in the location, then land disturbance will result in alteration of vegetation type. Conservationists and locals who valued the biodiversity of the vegetation in this area will lose out. It is likely that there will be barren patches left on the land and irreparable damage. Tourists who came to the Plateau to enjoy the scenery will have nothing to see any more. Additionally, soil erosion may make the place susceptible to dust storms thus affecting all locals who live nearby. In other circumstances, the project can lead to mine subsidence. Bathurst Resources will be mining millions of tones of coal from Denniston Plateau. This means that removal of the raw material will result in existence of an underground vacuum. Land on the surface can lower as a result of this space thus resulting in mine subsidence. Therefore, it will undermine land use for the locals if they ever plan on using that resource in the future. While local authorities have already anticipated this process and placed strict rules on how the challenge can be minimized. It is still true that not all surface lowering will disappear, and this will affect locals negatively. The problem of water pollution cannot be ignored when discussing the effects of the project. A coal mining project is one that places a lot of pressure on water resources in the concerned region. Bathurst Resources will place an additional demand on water, yet locals also rely on it. Unless the coalmine company commits itself to the use of recycled water, it may compete with members of the West Coast Regional Council with regard to the resource. Additionally, water pollution may result from the mine because it contains sediments and other pollutants. Therefore, the company will need to invest in a treatment plant. However, the treatment process will not be 100% efficient, and this may lead to water pollution of nearby locations. In relation to the above mentioned challenge is the problem of acid mine drainage. This refers to acidic water that stems from metals in drainage water reacting with sulfur-containing rocks. The overall product may manifest as surface run off and could cause heavy metals like mercury to appear in the surface or ground water. Acid mine drainage can also affect the local habitat in that location and thus affect biodiversity (Tiwary, 2001). One cannot ignore the issue of noise pollution when analyzing the effects of coal mining. Although this problem is minor, it is still worth noting. Local residents, especially families of t he miners must contend with this disturbance for as long as the mine continues to operate. Local populations may also be in danger of flooding if the coal mine opens. Bathurst will release high volumes of semi solid waste. The company will build a dam to handle this wastewater efficiently. However, in some parts of the world, dams have opened and contributed to deadly floods. This is a typical example of an environmental disaster that the project can create. In addition to the above, the coal mine could also put the locality at risk of fire. Coal is highly flammable, and if a fire starts inside the mine, then it can last for extremely long periods of time. In the mean time, it could release toxic fumes in the surrounding community. In essence, the only winners will be the owners of the coal mine and the few employees who work for them. Government authorities may also benefit through revenue collection. The coal production and export industry is highly profitable, so Bathurst Resourc es will enjoy immense returns from the investment. Consumers of the product would also benefit from a cheap source of energy. The Coca-Cola Amatil group holds about 56% of the market share in the non-alcoholic beverages, 40% market share in sports drink and 23% market share in bottled water (Greenblat, 2010). In market analysis, it is important to analyse the consumers, competitors, and carry out the five force analysis. Consumer Analysis Coca-cola products are usually enjoyed by people from all age groups. It has however been noted that a large percentage of people who consume products from CCL are those in the 16-32 age group making up 52% of the total consumers. The buying behaviour is mainly guided by attitudes and lifestyle of these consumers. The introduction of new products by the company usually receives positive reception while consumer satisfaction for our products has been generally high. Porter five forces analysis It is important to analyse the business micro environment in order to present a valid business marketing strategy. The Porter five forces are those forces that affect the ability of a corporation to make a profit or serve its consumers (Simon, 2006). It includes the company resources, the objectives, corporate culture and mission (Williams Williams, 2007). Review of Current Strategy and marketing mix Coca-Cola Amatil current strategy involves availing beverages to people all over the country and the other four countries that the company operates. The company does this by setting up a network of partner s, acquiring new business, participating in the marketing and distribution of other beverages such as alcohol and by using various strategies to improve its marketing of products. Coca-Cola Amatil marketing strategy includes the use of advertisements, sports sponsorship deals, games and competitions and the use of the internet to promote its products. The current marketing mix can be well represented by the four Pââ¬â¢s: Product: Coca-Cola Amatil produces a variety of non-alcoholic drinks as well as alcoholic drinks. The products include both internationally known brands and brands specifically produced for the country. Products include soft drinks, energy drinks, water, sports drinks, RTD tea and coffee, ready to eat fruits and flavoured milk. Product differentiation in most of these products is low hence there is a need for a unique product to retain competitiveness. Price: The current price for CCL products is low and very competitive. A large population can easily afford the se products on a regular basis. Promotion: CCLââ¬â¢s products are promoted through advertising and sales promotion. Performance and Financial analysis Over the past years, the company has had significant success and has made a lot of profit. The company has had a one digit increase in profits for the last 10 years. Despite the economic recession, the company still had an increase in profit during the period. In 2010, the company had a net profit of $497.3 million, representing a 10% increase in profit from the previous year. The trading revenue for the year stood at $4490.3 million while the operating cash flow totalled $585.5 Million decreasing by 22% since the last year. The earnings before tax (EBIT) for th e company were $844.9 showing a 7.3% increase from that in the previous year (Coca-Cola, 2010). The company stock as of 2010 stood at $11.60 and has been showing a steady growth. As it can be seen, the company is in a very strong financial position and stands to gain more competitive advantage with the right marketing strategy. In the case of Coca-Cola Amatil, determinants for strategic options include: Optimum utilization of the large amount of available capital Differentiation of products, producing a new product that differentiates it from its competitors Improving its promotional campaign; this involves increasing efforts in public relations and personal selling SWOT Analysis The SWOT analysis involves a look at the companyââ¬â¢s current position in respect to its competitors, market conditions, consumers, suppliers and government regulations (Pepall, Daniel Norman, 2005). The SWOT analysis will look at the situational factors affecting the business. Threats The internationally recognized brands are still etched in the minds of people hence a large group may ignore the new product and stick to that which they are familiar with. The Coke Zero product has also received negative reviews in some countries. This is because in several countries such as Venezuela, Sodium cyclamate a known carcinogen was used as a sweetener. Health concerns over consumption of soft drinks. Strategy Development This section deals with developing a marketing strategy that will enable the company to meet strategic marketing goals. Strategic Thrusts The Coca-Cola Amatil group main business strategy is to produce beverages for everyone in the country. Restricting access to distribution channels for the other competitors (niche strategies). Reducing cost of production by using innovative techniques of management and production (cost leadership) Sustainable Strategic Thrust Considering the initial and alternative strategic thrusts, the most appropriate thrust has to be the production of a new sports drink that is not available in the market. CCL should produce a healthy sports drink with very little calories, has high levels of proteins and vitamins and rejuvenate those participating in sports and the general population. This will not only target the young male population but also sportsmen and women. Marketing Goals The main marketing goals involve improving sales for the coke zero products. Market Development One of the main reasons CCL has not been able to capitalize on the young male population is that the sports drinks in the market are all similar and no healthy drink exists as of now. The Coke Diet beverage launched by CCL was largely viewed as feminine and most men ignored it. Coca-Cola has been able to modify this drink to produce Coke Zero, a diet drink that is geared to the male generation. Product Development In recent times, the soft drink industry has been growing slowly mainly due to health concerns that have arisen abo ut the consumption of soft drinks. It is therefore important to develop a new product that is not only health but also delivers the expected results. CCL has dominated the soft drinks market hence it should put more of its energy in the sports drink market. The intended product should be rich in proteins and vitamins as well as rejuvenating compounds that are common in energy drinks. The drink should also reduce the amount of calories present in the drink Product Differentiation The current products targeting the young male population are all similar. Due to health concerns, the soft drink industry growing very slowly. In order to maintain competitiveness, CCL should therefore develop a new product that differs from those in the market and meet the health expectations of the consumers. Another way will be through the development of a new innovative packaging. A coke zero grip bottle that has been innovatively design will be used to package the product and thus attract more of the ta rgeted consumers. Strategic Marketing Mix The marketing strategy mainly involves targeting and positioning (Aaker, 2007). According to research, over 80% of young men above the age of twenty participate in sports one way or another. This number is very high and may increase the market share for coca-cola products immensely. We shall first target sportsmen by highlighting that the company has a new range of sports drinks (coke zero) that not only meet the sports drinks requirement but is also healthy. Products The product being marketed is a new healthy beverage, a sports drink mainly produced for the young male population (coke zero). The product has very little calorie content and is high in vitamins and proteins. This combination makes for the ideal sports drink as it not only rejuvenates a person but it is also healthy. The product will be packaged in trendy bottles that convey sportsmanship. The marketing message will try to stress that the drink is healthy and is a new innovati on all our competitors envy (Sharp Dawes, 2001). Price The product will be cheap to buy and will generally cost less than those from our competitors. It will be available in most outlets throughout the country and stands in the stadiums. The pricing will be such that the company does not undergo a loss but low enough to make the product the drink of preference (Sharp Dawes, 2001). Place The drink will target the whole of the country. It will be available in supermarkets, shops, stadiums and gymnasium. In order to access the sports fraternity, the drink will mainly focus on sports related outlets until it stands out as the drink for the active sportsman (Sharp Dawes, 2001). Promotion As the drink mainly targets young men interested in sports, the drink will first of all be promoted through sports channels, and stadium advertisements such as banners and Advertisement slots in the stadium. Next, sports paraphernalia will be used as a means for promotion such as balls, t-shirts, shoe s etc. The drink will also be promoted through competitions in radio stations and television. To ensure sustainability and future profitability for the shareholders of Gillette he approached the merger with Lafley and P&G in 2002 originally and then subsequently in 2004. The opportunities resulting from this merger included a solid return for current shareholders as well as future profitability for P&G and Gillette as a singular business under the P&G name. Unfortunately, the problems included public reaction which was seen in media attacks following the merger in 2005 as well as the state of Massachusetts. Additionally, the possibility of losing money for shareholders if the deal turned out badly was an ever-present threat. However, the opportunities for profit and a mutually beneficial future for both companies outweighed the potential problems. Between both compa nies, there were defined market shares; P&G did not really hold a market share in razors, toothbrushes, and batteries though it did maintain a large market share in other similar products that would allow it to combine the three Gillette brands into its portfolio and profit. Gillette was more adept at marketing to men, while P&G was more adept at marketing to women. Additionally were the burgeoning foreign markets and the need for increased market shares in those areas. P&G is skilled in marketing and maintaining a significant presence in China while Gillette maintained large market shares in India and Brazil. With this evidence supporting the net benefit of a merger of interests, there does not seem to be much that could improve that.
